Rise in number of burglaries BY GRACE CABELL Burglaries are on the increase in the Papanui police district. Latest statistics from the Papanui station released to the Nor’West News show burglaries and break-ins have increased from 1068 in 2013, to 1153 in 2014. But the reasons for this and what
police are doing to reverse the trend are a mystery; repeated calls to senior Papanui police by the Nor’West News last week were not returned. The Canterbury district police did not return calls either. Papanui resident Marion Ferguson has lived in the area for 50 years, and has been burgled twice in the past two years.

A TURTLE EMERGENCY
Increase in burglaries
Donatello is a very loved 17 year old male Red-Ear Slider turtle who presented to our clinic after falling from stairs onto a concrete surface and fracturing his top shell (Carapace). An open fracture was apparent, approximately 15cm across the end portion of his shell, and this was mildly displaced.
•From page 1 “But they took jewellery - my husband had come home from bowls and left his bowling clothes on the bed and they took his bowling top to wrap all the items in it. They’d been through the duchess,” she said. The jewellery was never recovered. Mrs Ferguson said she felt safe in her community. “We have good neighbours looking out for us.” She said after the break-ins the couple had became more security conscious. Although burglaries have risen since 2013, according to the statistics they are lower than they were in 2010. That year there were
A turtle’s shell provides physical protection, shelter for hibernation and storage for fat and calcium. The shell is made of dermal bone covered with horny keratin layers known as scutes. These scutes are similar to the scales of other reptiles and overlap the seams between the shell bones and add strength to the shell. Traumatic injury to a turtles shell is one of the most common problems turtles present to veterinary clinics for. Donatello’s fracture needed to be addressed as soon as possible - just like any animal with a fracture. He received pain relief and antibiotics while the wound was cleaned, decontaminated and local anesthetic was applied. The next step in repair was more out of the ordinary than usual for us at McMaster & Heap and involved working with our local human dental clinic - Halswell Dental Centre. They helped us to apply a glass ionomer filling which is a modern product used in dentistry for permanent tooth fillings. This material contains a special silicate cement which releases fluorine to provide a local antibacterial effect and increases binding of calcium to mineralized tissue. The cement binds to the calcium component of bones and gives it a high strength. This up to date modern way of fixing turtle shell fractures has been used with great success to seal the fractures and allow fast healing. Once we arrived at the dental centre, Donatello was met with great enthusiasm. Thankfully with the help of one of their experienced dental surgeons, we aligned the fracture and applied the glass ionomer cement. As with our own dental fillings, a blue light was used to cure it and within a minute the fracture was stabilized. The glass ionomer cement will come off when the scutes are shed over time and the fracture heals. Donatello went home the same day on pain relief and antibiotics. He will have to stay in shallow water for a few weeks to allow the carapace to heal completely. It was such a joy working with him as he was a very compliant patient and to see him walking around his enclosure straight after the fixation was great. He obviously felt a lot better now his shell was stable again.
1352 recorded burglaries in Papanui. This number dropped to 994 in 2011 and reached 1107 in 2012. Abductions and kidnappings have also risen, by nearly 50 per cent, from 2013 to 2014. Two years ago there were only 4 reported abductions or kidnappings, where as last year there were 7. Assaults are on the rise too, with an increase of 529 in 2014 from 516 in 2013. Sexual assaults were the only decrease for the area, down from 59 in 2013, to 45 in 2014. The overall recorded offences for specific offences within the Papanui police station has dropped from 5024 to 4083 in the past four years (2010 to 2014).

$50k island going ahead BY GRACE CABELL A project to install a $50,000 pedestrian island near Fendalton Mall is going ahead. The 9m pedestrian island was proposed following concerns from residents about a lack of crossing facilities in the area. Residents say the nearest pedestrian crossing facility across Memorial Ave at the Clyde/ Fendalton/Memorial signalised intersection is too far. Questions have previously
been raised about the cost of the project. But Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said she was happy it was going in. She said at the community board’s meeting last month, there were no objections to the cost of the project. “We’ve been asking for it for about 10 years. It is a hot spot for traffic,” she said. An article in the Nor’West News last month generated heated
debate about the city council proposal. One reader said the cost of the pedestrian island was “insane.” “Seriously I can’t see more than $2000 in this work, and at the most if someone is getting ripped off, $5000,” said reader Lynne Moss. Another reader, Les Bruce, said the cost of the project was out of proportion with the work needing to be done. “Quite frankly I can see why my rates are increasing with such pro-
posals. I am sure the money could be put to better use. “I hope our community board members can see the folly of this project,” he said. The project comes after a city council plan to spend $8000 for a 40m strip of reflective green paint, traffic management and improvements to the Papanui and Blighs roads intersection. City council road corridor operations manager Paul Burden said the project would take two weeks to complete.

Out of order WRECKED: A traffic light pole on the corner of Northwood Boulevard and Main North Rd has been left like this since Friday, March 20. A city council spokeswoman said the cause of damage is unknown. She said work is under way on a suitable temporary traffic management plan to permit repairs to take place. Currently there is no date scheduled for the repair.

The iconic Sanitarium factory in Papanui will soon become a Mitre 10 Mega store. The hardware store has been granted resource consent to build on the site, but was not required to publicly notify it. Harewood Investments Limited will own the 13,518 sq m Mitre 10 Mega store. The Sanitarium factory has been on the Harewood Rd site since the 1970s. It produced Weet-Bix and Marmite there until the buildings were damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. The temporary closure of the factory led to a nationwide Marmite shortage. Harewood Rd site still occupied by Marmite production. The Marmite processing plant may continue to operate out of the site until up to 2019, when it will need to move to a new location. Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden did not return calls made by the Nor’West News. The proposed Mitre 10 development will occur in two stages. The first stage includes a portion of the proposed Mitre 10 building to be constructed and operational. Marmite production will continue for up to five years, until all Sanitarium manufacturing facilities are transferred from the site. Stage two includes the demolition of the Sanitarium processing plant.
When this is complete, a 2967 sq m extension of retail floor area and a garden centre will be constructed for the Mitre 10 building. Construction is aimed for completion by 2019. Traffic volumes of up to 2330 vehicle trips per day, and 4160 vehicle trips on Saturdays are proposed during the peak November trading month. During peak periods on general weekdays 230 vehicle trips per hour are estimated per hour, with 620 on a Saturday. Harewood Rd, on which the site sits, is also proposed to form part of the Wheels to Wings cycle route. This is one of the 13 major cycle routes that are planned for the city, based on the Christchurch Transport Strategic Plan.
An original Turkish red pine seedling from the original lone pine at Gallipoli will be planted at Rannerdale Home on Anzac Day. The seedling will be one of three to be planted around Christchurch to commemorate the 100th anniversary this month. The others will be planted at Burnham Military Camp and The Park of Remembrance. New Zealand Crown Research Institute Scion, based at the Canterbury University, has grown the seedlings at the School of Biological Sciences glasshouse. Scion researcher Alan Leckie said the seedlings will become the most important trees in New Zealand in terms of their Anzac connections. “These trees are providing a memorial to honour the memory of all those who have served and passed. They will be planted at The Park of Remembrance, Burnham Military Camp and Rannerdale Home.” The Scion nursery has a quarantine facility, a nursery sanitation policy and monitors any issue with the trees it grows for various trials throughout New Zealand. The World War 1 campaign in Gallipoli, Turkey, was one of the darkest events in New Zealand military history. Of the 7500 New Zealand casualties at Gallipoli, 2721 soldiers died. The lone pine tree in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery on the Gallipoli Peninsula holds the highest memorial significance for Australians and New Zealanders.

REMEMBER: Never leave anything on an open stove. HEATING UP: Workmen installing solar panels on the home of Michael Peterson of St Albans.
A new slant on solar power
St Albans resident Michael Peterson is the first person in the South Island to have solar panels on his home for free. A solar power company named solarcity has launched its solarZero service in Christchurch. Residents who choose to use it will pay for the power generated, and not for the panels. Mr Peterson said he had always wanted to go solar. “I know a lot of the power I’ve been using is generated from fossil fuels like coal and gas that are bad for the environment and now that I don’t have to pay for the panels I can do it without worrying about the cost,” he said. Homeowners are able to buy enough solar power to support
their day time energy needs for $64 per month. Founder and chief executive of solarcity Andrew Booth says Christchurch is now facing the highest power prices it has ever seen. “We know the cost of power has gone up by a staggering 51 per cent in Christchurch over the last 10 years and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. SolarZero will give Christchurch families who are often overwhelmed by the rising cost of power some certainty around what they will pay each month.” “Essentially you pay for the power that is generated, not the technology itself and it removes the whole upfront cost of solar, which in New Zealand is a huge barrier.
We know that 85 per cent of Kiwis want to go solar but the vast majority of them can’t afford the $10,000 to put a solar system on their roof. With solarZero it’s no longer an issue, because you don’t have to pay anything up front,” says Booth. The venture is backed by Stephen Tindall’s K1W1 investment and New Zealand Superannuation fund through Pencarrow. The goal of solarZero is to help the city work towards the government’s goal of having 90 per cent renewable energy by 2025. “Rebuilding Christchurch is hugely important for the future and with the launch of solarZero, solar power as a sustainable energy solution can now play a big part in this rebuild,” said Booth.
Fires in own station, restaurant and rest home BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER Wednesday last week saw the Addington crew responding to a fire in their own station. In reality they had a laminator overheat and turned it off. I mention it here because they did exactly what we ask the public to do. Even though they could handle the incident it was reported. So if laminators of that type start going on fire across the country we will have a record. In the case of a stovetop fire you might suffer, our crews can ensure that flame has not spread into extractors or walls. It’s what we do. Respond to fire. Speaking of stovetop fires, they can happen anywhere. Even in a Chinese restaurant in Riccarton, where the staff went home, inadvertently leaving
a pot on the stove last Saturday night. The building was reported full of smoke in the early hours of Sunday and the Sockburn crew had to break their way in. Luckily there were no flames. Just heaps and heaps of smoke. A clothes drier that caught on fire in a rest home in New Brighton last Friday, was put out by a single head of the sprinkler system in that room. This was a good example of why sprinklers are so important in places of care. Imagine the alternative. Building well involved in fire, staff struggling to evacuate wheelchair or walker restricted residents. A recipe of ingredients that could spell disaster. Thank heaven for modern requirements that ensure our most vulnerable are safe as they can be.

Aspiring athletes meet their favourite players Belfast School pupil Emily Harris won the opportunity to meet her favourite netballer at the Canterbury Tactix and Southern Steel game. Emily, 9, was joined by Timaru resident Jess Hunter-Brady, 13 as they stood side by side with Tactix captain Anna Thompson and Steel captain Wendy Frew, in front of thousands of fans at the Horncastle Arena on Monday. The two young netballers won the opportunity to meet the captains and high-five each player as they ran on court through the ANZ Future Captains competition. Emily said the best part was get-
ting to meet her favourite player, Thompson. “It was really fun getting to high-five the players and especially Anna. My mum, dad and sister were there in the stands watching me and they were really happy and proud.” Roncalli College pupil Jess said she was excited to get signatures from most of the Tactix players. “Going out on court was quite nerve-wracking, but once I was out there it was exciting and getting to high-five the Steel players was really fun.” ANZ head of sponsorship Susan McGregor said many young net-
ballers dream to compete in the elite transtasman tournament, and being involved gives them a taste of what it’s like. “We’re giving 62 children from across the country the chance to be a Future Captain at each of the ANZ Championship matches this season. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience to stand out on court with the pros, and hopefully it inspires a few players to keep training hard. “It could definitely be one of them one day soon,” she said. The match saw the Steel beat the Tactix 84 by 58 goals.

St Patrick’s helps the Philippines St Patrick’s School pupils have taken part in the annual Caritas fundraising appeal. This year’s focus is on the Philippines, and how to build back better following a natural disaster. The pupils and school community carried buckets of water around the school grounds to recreate the task of delivering the basic human need. The pupils carried out the task during the school day, both individually and with a partner. Some even did the task several times. A gold coin was donated following every lap of water carried around the school grounds. The school raised $225 in total for the appeal.

Knowing Your Rights
The cost of a funeral The cost of a funeral can add to what is often already a stressful time and we frequently see situations where it leads to further tension in family relationships. With funerals commonly costing upwards of $8000, there are a variety of options you can explore to limit the cost of your own funeral when that time comes. You can plan ahead for a funeral, and either pay in advance or make regular installments towards the total cost. It’s worth checking your life insurance policy as it may include a payout for funeral costs. Otherwise, you can save up for your funeral just by starting up a savings account at your bank. Other options include funeral insurance, a funeral trust, or a prepayment plan with a funeral director. These generally come with various fees and restrictions, so it’s worth seeking independent financial advice if you are thinking about doing this. If you need to organise a funeral and are on a low income, you may be eligible for a funeral grant from

The city council is asking residents to have their say on a new retirement village proposed for Cavendish Rd. The company who has applied for resource consent is Summerset – the third largest retirement village operator in New Zealand. The retirement village will be home to 185 residential units, including a mix of single and two-storey townhouse, villa and apartment options. It will also host a three-storey main building and care facility. The proposal includes facilities such as a cafe, lounge and bar, library and gymnasium. A bowling green, swimming pool and spa are also included in the plans. Consultation opened on April 4, and closes on May 5. The village on 129-137 Cavendish Rd will be the second facility built by Summerset for Christchurch. The company is currently constructing an $86m retirement village on 9.9ha of rural land in Wigram. Summerset owns eight villages nationwide. HAVE YOUR SAY Do you think the Summerset Retirement Village should be built on Cavendish Rd? WINNERS: The Canterbury under-12/13 interprovincial athletics team which won the national competition last weekend.
Canterbury’s 14th win in athletics champs
BY KYLE KNOWLES Canterbury has set a record by winning its 14th under-12/13 interprovincial athletic championships. They won the Graham Vivian Shield for the first time since 2011 beating Auckland in second and Wellington in third. The team event was held in Hamilton and Canterbury’s 44 best under-13 athletes were too good for the rest of the country’s other 11 provinces. Team manager Lynn Ferris said it was a fantastic weekend where the Canterbury side cleaned up the competition. “I’ve done this for 12 years and that was the highest score
we’ve had and it was pretty good performance. It’s all about the team which had some really top athletes and the lower ones still really contribute tor the team the success.” Fia Lai Kong was a standout for the Canterbury team finishing second overall in the under-12 girls section. Ferris said Fia did extremely well and any other year her 2943 points would have won her the individual title but she came up against an exceptional athlete Kaia Tupu-South of Auckland. Fia’s performance was down to her all-round skills both on the track and field events. She does not have a specialist event and was able to compile her

HAT’S the difference between an archaeologist and a cheese judge? Nothing when they are the same person. And Thalassa (Lassa) Skinner is both. The cheese connoisseur and cheesemonger from California’s Napa Valley, recently visited this country as a judge for the annual New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards. However, Lassa didn’t plan a life in cheese. Her parents were geologists

It all comes down to the availability of good milk.” This year, more than 450 specialty cheeses, yoghurts and butters were entered in the awards. geting the right FIRST
AID TRAINING
Not all first aid certificates are created equal. While first aid courses must achieve the prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.
T
here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below is a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term ‘workplace’ can vary from a small office to a large factory, where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in
industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry’s risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment. • Unit Standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment. • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six
hours’ training and assessment. First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conducts regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double highly confident accreditation in both educational performance and capability in self-assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a category one training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the
provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month grace period, so the cut-off period is two years and three months, which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times. Contact New Zealand Red Cross or visit www.redcross.org.nz to discuss your training requirements. Download our free life saving app as additional help to ensure that knowledge and help is always at your fingertips.

home is where the Art Is
F
Good drama teaching allows young people to thrive in a fun-filled environment. Drama classes help them grow in self-esteem and confidence. Also, drama can help students with reading or other learning disabilities by offering an opportunity to succeed in a fun, relaxed way.
T
he aim of the Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy is not to produce stars, although this is often a natural consequence of the work we do, but to develop confidence in young people to communicate with each other and the world at large in a clear, articulate manner. By giving children opportunities to succeed in drama, children believe in themselves and their own abilities. Some of the many
consequences of our programme include improved concentration at school, better relations with peers and most importantly, a positive outlook in life. Never before has it been as important as it is now to set children up for life and prepare them with the life skills needed today and for their future. Enrol your child now at Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, we know we will make a positive change in your child’s life.

or Freeman White, home is where the art is. Home also happens to be in the heart of Hawkes Bay, where a renovated colonial villa doubles as Freeman’s home and studio. Renovations to it began after he graduated from The Learning Connexion in 2001. It has been, in his eyes, “an evolving work of art in its own right.” Just as home renovating requires a whopping amount of dedication and discipline, so too does the journey of becoming a selfsustaining artist. In Freeman’s case, all his work and constant practice paid off when, in 2006, he won first prize at the Adam Portrait Awards with his textural painting Portrait of Hans. “Winning was the most definitive point in my early artistic career,” explains Freeman. “This legitimised my work and allowed me to get my name recognised. It also opened up a number of opportunities.” Since that first major coup, Freeman’s paintings have been showcased in separate Adam Portrait Awards and other shows such as the Hawkes Bay Invitational and the Norsewear Art Awards. Freeman’s work has appeared in highly regarded publications in New Zealand and seven of his paintings reside in the collection of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. The Royal Society of New Zealand has also collected his works, a testament to Freeman’s timeless and original style. It is no surprise then that he was nominated Wellington’s Top Artist by the Wellington Capital Times’ Best of 2010 poll. Freeman’s artistic journey has seen him undertake a number of artist residencies in locations as diverse as Edinburgh and
Freeman White
Louisiana. “I have always found these experiences inspiring and they always produce definitive work,” he says. “There is no better way to travel, really. I love doing residencies…it’s like a dream come true.” Painting commissions (such as portraits for the recent What We Do In The Shadows film), as well as exhibiting work ensures Freeman’s creative career remains sustainable. At the same time, he continues to evolve his thick and loose impasto style of painting, which is at the core of his perceptive portraits and iconic landscapes. And, always ready to up the ante, he searches out new opportunities and goals, one of which is to eventually win the coveted Wallace Art Awards. But it is his passion to steadily grow as an artist which is truly the foundation upon which he builds his flourishing career from his home base in the bay. Time to say goodbye
Hillview - 651 Lower Sefton Rd, Sefton For sale by deadline private treaty, closing at 2pm on Friday, April 24, 2015 (unless sold prior) 5 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 lounge | 1 dining room | 2-car garage | Listing #: RG7181
Y
es, time to say goodbye and hand over the keys to new owners who will enjoy creating their own memories in this lovingly cared for, quality built family home in immaculate condition. This property, “Hillview”, offered to the market for the first time has wonderful vistas to Mount Grey, and as the garden shelter, has matured over the years; the views are now framed by the spring garden borders and established native hedging. Sited perfectly for all-day sun and sitting proudly within well-maintained grounds, the family residence consists of five bedrooms, two bathrooms, an expansive light-filled kitchen with a large corner box window, and plenty of bench and cupboard space. The dining/family room opens to the lounge through timber and glass doors, where the spacious lounge offers lovely garden views through floor to ceiling windows. The double garage with automatic doors has internal access to a roomy hallway with plenty of storage space. The four-hectare property is divided into four paddocks surrounded by established mature hedging, and are complemented by a 12 x 6-metre barn, with an additional lockable workshop and wood/storage shed. Tucked away behind the hedge, easily accessible from the kitchen, is a productive vegetable garden, alongside several apple and peach trees complete with garden shed. Accessed by a winding driveway flanked with attractive specimen trees, this charming lifestyle property offers many options for a variety of rural/lifestyle pursuits. Properties
such as this are seldom available for sale and tend not to last, so phone Linda for the price guide and an appointment to view. Price plus GST (if any). For sale by deadline private treaty, closing at 2pm on Friday, April 24, 2015 (unless sold prior). Open home dates: Sunday April 12, 3pm to 4pm and Sunday April 19, 2pm to 3pm. See you at one of the open days or to arrange a private viewing, call Linda Warren-Davey from Harcourts Twiss Keir Realty Ltd (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on mobile 027 300 0145 or phone 03 313 6158.
